Acceptance Rules
Admission to the Academy is done on competitive principle: the applicants are selected by an admissions committee on the basis of creative competitions carried out by means of entrance exams.
Studying at educational and qualification degree “Bachelor” and “Master” for the Restoration major exclusively, is open for application to international citizens who hold a secondary education diploma that gives them access to university education in the country where they acquired secondary education.
Studying at educational and qualification degree “Master” is open for application to international citizens who hold a higher education diploma that gives them access to university education in the country.
PhD positions are open for application to individuals who hold an education and qualification degree “Master”. Those who graduated from universities abroad can apply after the higher education they acquired has been recognized by virtue of the Ordinance on the State Requirements for Recognition of University Education Acquired in Foreign Institutions of Higher Learning.
Foreign citizens can apply to the National Academy of Art:
- 1. in pursuance of intergovernmental educational, scientific and cultural exchange agreements
- 2. in accordance with Council of Ministers’ acts
- 3. after payment of tuition fees.
Foreign citizens can apply for education under the conditions and regulations for admission of Bulgarian citizens in the institutions of higher education of the Republic of Bulgaria, if:
- 1. they have a status of permanent residents on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria
- 2. they have refugee status
- 3. they are of Bulgarian nationality, as determined by virtue of Ordinance of the Council of Ministers № 103 of 1993 on carrying out educational activity among the Bulgarians abroad.
The applicants mentioned in item 3 are admitted within the number of students annually approved by the Ministerial council.
- Admission to the National Academy of Art of students, PhD and post-graduate students – citizens of countries that are member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area – should take place under the conditions and regulations of article 68, paragraph 7 of the Higher Education Act /Admission of students, PhD and post-graduate students - citizens of countries that are member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area is done under the conditions and regulations determined for Bulgarian citizens/.
- The applicants coming from countries that are member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area, who do not satisfy the requirements under article 68, paragraph 7 of the Higher Education Act, should pay a tuition fee amounting to 2500 EUR per year for educational and qualification degree “Bachelor” and 3000 EUR per year for educational and qualification degree “Master”.
- It is compulsory for foreigners who applied to the National Academy of Art to pass a preparatory course in Bulgarian language or to hold a document showing a successful result on a Bulgarian language exam. The National Academy of Art provide as possibility for the applicants studying at the preparatory department of Bulgarian language at the National Academy of Art to simultaneously receive information and preparation for their forthcoming application to the academy.

1. Full course of study
1) Application which includes concise personal information, the major the applicant would like to follow, a summary of the aims and purposes accompanied, if necessary, by a short CV;
2) Copy of the secondary education diploma, certified in the consulate and translated into Bulgarian, guaranteeing that it gives the right for further education in a university, academy or other institution of higher education;
3) Document certifying the level of Bulgarian /if the applicant has not attended the preparatory section in Bulgarian at the National Academy of Art/;
4) Medical certificate translated into Bulgarian;
5) Declaration confirming the sufficient finances for regular payment of tuition fee and all other costs related to the period of education at the Academy;
6) Copy of identification card,
7) Two recent photographs.
2. Part-time course of study
Besides the abovementioned documents an academic record from the university attended by the applicant prior to applying to the Academy should be submitted.
Application documents for educational and qualification degree “Bachelor”
can be submitted:
- For citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area who meet the requirements of article 68, paragraph 6 of the Higher Education Act – the deadline for submitting the documents is from ... to ...
- For foreign citizens and citizens of the European Union and the European Economic Area who do not meet the requirements of article 68, paragraph 6 of the Higher Education Act – the deadline for submitting the documents is until ... and from ... to ..., and, by virtue of Ordinance of the Council of Ministers №103 and cultural agreements – at the Ministry of Education and Science, referring to a schedule determined by the Ministry in question.
3. Educational and qualification degree “Master”
1.) Application, accompanied by a short CV. The application form can be downloaded from here -

2.) Copy of the higher education diploma (educational qualification degree “Bachelor” or equivalent education from a recognized educational institution). The diploma should be certified in the consulate and translated into Bulgarian.
3) Document certifying the level of Bulgarian /if the applicant has not attended the preparatory section in Bulgarian at the National Academy of Art/;
4) Medical certificate translated into Bulgarian;
6.) Declaration confirming the sufficient finances for regular payment of tuition fee and all other costs related to the period of education at the Academy;
7.) Copy of identification card,
8.) Two recent photographs.
The application documents are submitted: from 13 to 23 September 2010 and from 25 October to 22 November 2010.
4. Educational and qualification degree “PhD”
1.) Application, accompanied by a short CV and possible dissertation theses, and a list of research publications (if applicable);
2.) Copy of the higher education diploma (educational qualification degree “Master”). The diploma should be translated into Bulgarian and certified at the consulate;
3.) Document certifying the level of Bulgarian /if the applicant has not attended the preparatory section in Bulgarian at the National Academy of Art/;
4.) Two letters of reference written by university professors or research scholars;
5.) Medical certificate translated into Bulgarian;
6.) Declaration confirming the sufficient finances for regular payment of tuition fee and all other costs related to the period of education at the Academy;
7.) Copy of identification card,
8.) Two recent photographs.
Documents are submitted throughout the year.
4. Specializations (short-term and long-term)
1.) Application with concise personal information, area of research and theme of specialization, period, preferred time of specialization;
2.) Copy of higher education diploma;
3.) Proof of language knowledge of Bulgarian or one of the official internationally recognized languages;
4.) Declaration confirming the sufficient finances for regular payment of tuition fee and all other costs related to the period of education at the Academy;
5.) Two recent photographs
6.) Copy of identification card.
Applicants dealing with intergovernmental agreements submit their application to the Ministry of Education and Science through the competent institutions in the country their application comes from. The applicants are admitted under the conditions and regulations defined in the intergovernmental agreements, after coordination with the respective institutions of higher education.
The applicants pursuing education in accordance with the Ordinances of the Council of Ministers should submit their documents to the Ministry of Education and Science and are admitted under the conditions and regulations defined in the respective Council of Ministers’ act.
Financial Information
Tuition fees (in euro)
- Bachelor programmes - 2500 euro per academic year
- Master programmes - 3000 euro per academic year
- PhD programmes - 3500 euro per academic year
- Extramural PhD programmes - 2000 euro per academic year
- Specializations - 420 euro per month
- Bulgarian language course - 2000 euro per academic year
- The students, PhD and post-graduate students – citizens of countries that are members of the European Union and the European Economic Area, applying under the conditions and regulations for Bulgarian citizens, and classified for admission to the National Academy of Art, should pay semester fees in BGN, determined by the Council of Ministers.
The students paying for their tuition in cash or by cheque, can pay the tuition fee in two installments, with the first 50% payable upon enrollment , and the rest – not later than the beginning of the summer semester.
All foreign applicants deposit an application fee in the financial department of the National Academy of Art, together with the application; the application fee is non-refundable.
Academic activity
The academic year at the Academy consists of a winter and a summer semester, with two respective examination sessions. The winter semester starts in October and ends in January; the summer semester starts in February and ends in May. The examination sessions fall approximately in the first half of February and throughout June; the supplementary examination sessions are in February and September.
The duration of the bachelor programme at the National Academy of Art is four academic years, while the master programmes take one and a half academic years (with the exception of the “Restoration” major which is only offered as a master programme, as already noted).
Teaching at the Academy is done according to subjects, while each subject’s credits are measured in certain number of hours per semester of academic year. The courses in different subjects end with exams that are graded according to the six-point grading system. The professional tasks, the conferences, the final papers, the diploma works and projects are an important component of the educational process, together with the theoretical examinations.
